First of all, I respect Sarkodie a lot, I’ve been following his music since his inception into this industry.
He has earned the right to claim that he made it on his own -- and oh by the way I’ve about 200 tracks made by him.
What caused me to write this article? Well it was his recent rant on the media about us not being supportive of his career but publishing negative stories all the time about him.
Yes! Sarkodie indeed made it on his own even before the media chipped into his success in the latter days of his career – If there is any artiste who has familiarized himself with the word “hustle” then is “obidi”. So I sometimes share in his sentiments when he raises issues that "he is a poor boy coming from the streets" – which is obviously the life situation of many Ghanaians including other upcoming artists. No media man can claim he contributed to Sarkodie's success at the inception of his career, there are still many of his mixtapes which have never received airplay.
Let me address some of the issues he raised in his controversial mixtape “free press” which is currently the talk of town.
“Since Kwame Nkrumah we’re are proud of nothing else”, that’s a line from the song which I find quite ridiculous by the way. This shows how Sarkodie is ungrateful even to his fans, the media and the nation as a whole. If I’m not mistaken, a lot of his fans and music lovers are very proud of him for his achievements especially his BET win and other prestigious awards. The media also writes stories citing him as Ghana’s BET Award Winner almost every time we make a story about him. The success he is making now can somehow be attributed to how proud the media is about his achievements in the industry.
He also made this line “dabiaa pull him down cos negativity sells” which honestly I find a bit funny. Media men especially bloggers make money from revenue they generate from visits to their blog. I for example run ads which are either “pay per click” or “pay per view” and if negative stories will earn me my daily bread then why will I hesitate to write them. Sarkodie himself capitalize on music which are negative in some sense – he either makes or feature in sexually suggestive videos because “sex sells”. Why can’t we the media also do same or is he suggesting to us that if we were to decide to stop writing negative publications about him he is ready to sponsor our blogs?
Sarkodie also said and I quote in twi “obi firi ne kurom b3y3 biri bi a, ye hu ne huge – we’re looking for superstars but we’re still sleeping on Fuse” - Seriously, is Sarkodie telling us that he doesn't feel like a big superstar when he crosses our boarders into other countries to perform?
Why is he eager to push the nation out there by seeking to collaborate with these stars outside whom he doesn't see to be huge - does that even make sense at all? Is true that we don't acknowledge most of the stars we have in our home country but is also wrong for us to belittle the big names out there who have achieved a lot more than him.
And what's this talk about we sleeping on Fuse ODG - I want Sark to know that apart from Fuse there are a lot of Ghanaian artists out there who are doing a lot in pushing GH Music, S.O Senavoe, M.anifest, Sway and the rest.
He also goes like "Daa me tu kwan go BET is only me, no media men but they have time to tweet" - This shows how ignorant Sarkodie is in a way, please excuse me for my french. Honestly how many times has Sarkodie even been to the BET Awards? If I'm not mistaken it's twice and for media men being at the show, I want Obidi to know that Jay Foley of 4stye TV and YFM
was invited as a special guest by Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) Africa and BET International to cover the BET Awards 2013 - and the keyword here was "INVITED".
You don't expect me to make an expense trip to the BET Awards first of all without a press pass or an invite - how will I even get access to cover the show?
And by the way, most bloggers including myself are just freelance journalists - Most of us feed on online contents and gossips for stories we make due to our budgets.
Yes! Sarkodie, Christ Vincent made a publication that you among other African Stars allegedly performed for Cleaners and Technicians at the BET Experience in LA but the said publication wasn't meant to demean you but rather send a message to the BET organizers who since Adam have always taken African stars for granted. He even ended by saying "
If what is being alleged is true, BET Awards organizers seriously need to sit up and deal with our African artistes in a deserving manner"...so I think there is absolutely no cause to rant on the media concerning this issue!
Besides,American RnB act Brandy performed to an empty stadium with only 40 fans in South Africa - and our own FOKN bois once performed to just fishes sometime ago when their fans stood them up at their show held at a beach -- so Sark be glad that they were at least humans who were not even forced to witnessed you perform - even if that story was justified.
I would have also loved to talk a lot about Shatta Wale also but I think the least said about him the better - he is so ungrateful.
So I'll just ask that did Shatta Wale win any awards when he was known back then as Bandana at the time when the media was absent from his musical career? Even before he became Shatta Wale and he lost the Award to Kaakie, wasn't it his own strength without the media that cause him that loss?
Trust me, for Shatta I can boldly say that the media played a big role in who he is today and if you're an SM fan and you want to dare me I can give you facts as to why he is Shatta Wale today because of the Ghanaina Media support and criticisms!
